We caught up with Cody Solberg who is sponsored by Piscifun and talked to him regarding his Head2Head Fishing Season this year in 2024.

Q. What expectations did you have for yourself as you set out to take on this field of anglers in 2024?

A: We had team effort expectations for sure. We knew this was a team event going into it and that’s how we knew we had to treat it. Making sure both anglers are effectively fishing to put the numbers of fish in the boat that we needed to, to ensure the win. We wanted to finish high, and we wanted to be sure we could make the championship with a high seed placement. With that the expectations of pre fishing and grinding out what we knew was working during our events we were able to reach that goal. Now we are hoping to take what we’ve learned throughout the season into the playoffs and have the same results.

Q. What do you feel set you apart from the field so far this season in H2H competition?

A: The Head2Head fishing field this year had some great sticks! We knew going into these events we were going to have to fish hard and figure out bites that were going to allow us to simply put big numbers of fish in the boat. We spent a lot of time searching for spots that were holding fish tightly, and not straying too far from those areas. Target rich environments was our goal with the use of forward-facing sonar being our main technique. Once dialing these areas in I feel it was as simple as our communication in the boat while fishing. Constantly searching and talking back and forth about what we were seeing on our electronics. Making precise casts and making sure boat control was spot on for effective fishing. Overall, I feel our communication in the boat and teamwork is what sets us apart from our competitors. Making sure Ted and myself were on the same page going into each event on our technique and what we were going to do if things went south. We always had a plan!

Q. What Piscifun Reels have you used so far throughout this season?

A: Piscifun reels have been used in practically every event for us! The Carbon X 2000 and Alumix 2000 reels have been the staple for us in the boat all season. Buttery drags, smooth reeling, and price point drove us to these with the multiple set-ups we had in the boat. We switch back and forth constantly depending on the bite we are on and having a dependable reel goes a long way. Been really impressed with the designs and usability of these reels!

How is H2H different from traditional tournament fishing?

A: There is a big difference between traditional tournament fishing and Head2Head fishing! Your mind set goes from finding 3 or 5 BIG fish to how many fish can we put in the boat during 4 hours. Adjusting to knowing what the opposing team has at all times and learning to keep your mental state in the game when you’re down. Do you trust your gut based on your pre-fishing results that it’ll be enough? Or do your instincts take over to adjust your techniques or programs to be sure you pull off the win. There are a lot of critical decisions you need to make on the fly and much quicker than traditional 8-hour tournament days, because you only get 4! Keeping your mental game in check is the most important aspect to being sure you don’t lose your technique or touch when pulling fish in the boat. You NEED to catch fish, and if that goes downhill it doesn’t take long to get behind.
